You can’t change my mind. February is the best month of the year. It marks Black History Month— an annual event that honors the resilience and contributions of African Americans and Black people in general. This is a time of remembrance, as we move to celebrate the best parts of black culture. It calls on us to reflect on the significant roles of past and future leaders and how they’ve shaped U.S. history and the rest of the world.
The soul that is within me no man can degrade.Frederick Douglas
Don’t forget to acknowledge black LGBT+ and women, who don’t receive the credit they deserve. The fight for their liberation continues, because of the intersecting struggle of being black, woman, or queer. Remember, there’s a shared history here and we should honor the experiences of everyone.
You are only as beautiful as the many beautiful things you do for others without expectation.Janelle Monae
Celebrate this month with me! Here are some ways you can:
- Visit a local Civil Rights Museum. Take a friend with you!
- Read, read, and read. Pick up an autobiography, book, or poetry!
- Support black businesses. Brag about it too! It helps with visibility.
- Watch black films!
- Support your black creative friends! Don’t ask for discounts. Just buy it.
And if these aren’t enough to keep you busy, you can always read and share articles from Fruit of May, which is a black-owned platform. FUBU (For Us By Us), baby.
How else do you plan on celebrating?
Happy Black History Month!
